A Selection of Music Video Work from Encyclopedia Pictura

This is just a selection of work from San Francisco based filmmakers Encyclopedia Pictura. These guys have been some of my favourite music video creators since I first saw the video they made for 'Knife' by Grizzly Bear. They have an astonishingly original and creative approach to making short films and music video.

Check more of their stuff on their representative agency site Ghost Robot. 'Grow' is fantastic!

Ball by Ries Straver

Ball from Ries Straver on Vimeo.

"Ries Straver’s “Ball” is at first glance a simple study of tension and expectations but the foreboding characteristics of the girl elevate it to a level of auspicious uneasiness."

Short film (XH A1 with SgPro)

Directed by Anders Øvergaard

This is an incredibly well shot and well edited film. This was shot using a Canon XH A1 and an SgPro lens adapter similar to the Letus Extreme that I have ordered. The reason I'm posting this up here is not only that it's a great short film, but because the director Anders Ã˜vergaard was the only crew member . This shows how cheap and labour free it can be to make incredibly professional looking work.

"When I was visiting my cabin this summer, I wanted to make a new test with my Canon XH A1 and SgPro. I wrote a small script and I used my uncle, my cousins and my sister as actors."

Brilliant.

The Beatles: Rock Band Intro HD

Absolutely stunningly beautiful animation by Pete Candeland, the man behind the music videos for Gorillaz. I'm not a huge fan of all of the Gorillaz videos, but this is absolutely amazing! It has a similar feel to it as Waltz With Bashir. If you haven't seen Waltz With Bashir, I strongly recommend it.

Jettison Your Loved Ones

This is a short from music video director Ray Tintori. This was his first short film and had it shown at Sundance before he could legally enjoy toasting to his success!  The narrative style is very similar to Wes Anderson's 'The Royal Tenenbaums'.

Darling Darling

www.imdb.com/title/tt0481503/

Darling Darling is a great short film I saw earlier on Shorts TV.

It's from 2005 and stars Michael Cera as a nervous teenager trying to make a good impression on his dates eccentric parents. The scene where I turned it on was amazing. Her dad (a guy with a horse head) is playing this amazing power solo on guitar in front of Cera and starts intruding on Cera's personal space.

It's so good! I'm going to try to find it online or maybe upload it to youtube.

Tactical Advantage

Here's a great short that Mangello Tipperary collaborated on with Encyclopedia Pictura. The people who brought us Grizzly Bear's Knife video and Bjork's Wanderlust video.

Mare Street - E8

This is a really cool looking concept animation. Music and animation by Digital Club.
